Courtland Sutton was a three-star Scout.com recruit that was named first-team All-District as a tight end and second team as a safety. Sutton chose SMU over offers from BYU, Colorado and Rice and was originally going to play safety coming out of high school.
Sutton medically redshirted his Freshman season. Sutton is still very raw and is only beginning to tap into his potential. He is all of 6’4”and is a very fluid athlete for his size. With his great size comes to opportunity to be a great jump ball player because he has the size and ability to adjust to the football. Sutton can get high in the air and use his hands in contested situations in order to make the catch.
Physically he is a mismatch for every CB (you will see this in just about every TD catch he has). On top of his great size, Sutton runs close to a 4.45 40 yard dash. This sets him up to make huge plays and I love big play potential from a prospect.
SMU HC Chad Morris said that he believed that WR Courtland Sutton will eventually be viewed as one of the best wide receivers in the country. As a Freshman, Sutton put up 3/82/2 line against Baylor and a 4/115/1 line against TCU. Here is the game tape from the Baylor game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-PqcKCB8_k Suttons first catch is the first play of the game on offense for SMU at the 8:18 mark. His second comes at 58:38. These two catches display his ability to run by defenders, go up and make a contested catch (first one), and then force defenders to miss tackles (second one).
He body catches more than I would like but has good hands and even makes some circus receptions. Want to see one? Here are the highlights from the 2015 game against TCU. Start paying attention 23 seconds in.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ_CQtEC2jg He makes a ridiculous adjustment and catch and his touchdown on that drive comes shortly thereafter on a slant route.
Sutton uses his strength and agility to make defenders miss in the open field. He is a solid route runner that shows signs of being a technician. Sutton has top 10 NFL WR potential. Here is the 2015 highlight reel for Suttonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e56BQea7Sw Now, I know these things can make anyone and everyone look good but watch these catches and you will see what I’m talking about. He simply uses his size and athletic ability to go up and get the football and he consistently does this. This clip also does a great job of showing his adjustments and then his body awareness after the catch.
