Patrick Mahomes has great size for the position. At 6’3 and 220 pounds (ESPN has him listed slightly bigger at 230lbs), Mahomes athleticism gives him the build to be a solid dual threat and the size to push the pile if needed. Mahomes best characteristic is his ability to extend plays. https://mobile.twitter.com/jdrch/status/682249032283066368

Playing in a spread system subjects the quarterback to an increase in pressure and can often times cause error in judgment because of quick releases and short routes. Mahomes does a great job of bouncing around in the pocket in order to give his receivers a chance to run their routes down field.  Mahomes will also run if no one is open. In 2015, he ran 131 times for 456 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Mahomes also has legit arm strength. http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/texas-tech-patrick-mahomes-pass-from-knees-video-twitter-060316 Mahomes has one of the strongest arms in college football and it can be seen on a weekly basis. As a raw prospect there is a lot to like about Mahomes.

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury, via ESPN, said "[Mahomes] can extend plays as well as I've ever seen. And his accuracy when plays break down, as far as a thrower, moving around, throwing from different angles ...  Pat's the best I've ever been around." During a more recent interview with Fox Sports Kingsbury said that he sees similarities between junior QB Pat Mahomes and Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers. Over the spring, Kingsbury posted Twitter videos of Mahomes completing no-look passes. "I just saw those plays, watching Aaron Rodgers play, he'll do that no-look stuff and Pat's kind of working that into his game in some areas" said Kingsbury. https://mobile.twitter.com/TTUKingsbury/status/718103962805645313

Mahomes is a streaky player. When things are good, he’s on top of it but when things take a turn for the worst you can often see Mahomes making questionable decisions and losing his touch. A lot of Mahomes mistakes can be contributed to his lack of footwork. Mahomes makes a lot of throws off balance and with god awful footwork, often times resulting in bad passes and more decision making. https://mobile.twitter.com/DraftCowboys/status/765742119763976192
That being said, since he is so athletic sometimes he does something like this https://mobile.twitter.com/TTUKingsbury/status/763900783586795520

Mahomes has 8 games on Draft Breakdown. You can find those here if you wish to watch them. http://draftbreakdown.com/players/patrick-mahomes/ I would recommend watching the WVU game http://draftbreakdown.com/video/patrick-mahomes-vs-west-virginia-2015/  This game is arguably one of Mahomes worst games from 2015 in my opinion, probably just better than the Oklahoma game, but you can see a lot of what I touched on above. He finished the game with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception, 196 yards passing and 73 yards rushing. Not bad for one of his worst games. Again his athleticism really allows him to be productive on the field even when he is not executing perfectly. He makes some poor decisions and throws a bad interception. There is a pass early on across his body that should have been intercepted and returned for a touchdown but the defensive player misjudged the ball. He also seems to be in a rush at times and throws the ball without being set. I think he throws a screen pass high, and misses a wide open receiver on back to back plays because his feet aren’t set.  Mahomes also used his legs in designed runs as well as scrambling. I also wish he would protect the ball a little more when he runs around in the pocket. You will see at one point in the WVU game he looks like he is going to get sacked and is just holding the ball one handed towards the defender but somehow escaped. In these games you will hear a lot of “DeAndre Washington” and “Jakeem Grant” two players who are no longer at Texas Tech so Mahomes is going to have to develop chemistry with some new guys. But he has the tools to put up some numbers in a hurry some of his stat lines are ridiculous. He performed well in the bowl game against LSU even though Texas Tech was the far inferior team. He finished that game with 370 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.

I know everyone loves the highlight videos so here is Mahomes’ from 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyXS9nD350s It is about 12 minutes long but you will get an idea of the type of player Mahomes is. He is a big arm QB. Some of his throws have perfect form and look great and then there are some throws where he goes off of his back foot and just flicks his wrist and throws it 50+ yards.

All in all, Mahomes is a prospect that has high upside. I actually have Mahomes in my top 10 devy QB Prospects. I have him there because I am worried about the footwork I think that is something that if he doesn’t work on it that he will get knocked for come draft time. However, like I said he does have high upside and just looking at my list of QBs I think he has higher upside over guys like Anu Soloman (Arizona), Chad Kelly (Ole Miss), and DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame)…. All QBs I have ranked higher than Mahomes currently.
